Connecting to ACE InfoSystems with a Mac using Config PPP

by Mike Chivers

Config PPP is freeware and I'll upload a copy as soon as I can find one.
In the meantime, here are the directions for users who already have it.
Although I haven't used it, I would guess FreePPP would work very
similarly.

Installing:

Install following the directions that accompany your software. In order
to connect, you will need your PPP Program and the MacTCP Control Panel.
I'll try to upload as much of these as I can find but if you can't find
them, buy a copy of MacAddict magazine and the accompanying CD Rom is bound
to have what you need

If you have been using a Slip connection, remove all of your Slip
related software and place them in a folder marked "SlipStuff" or some
such name. You may also want to create subfolders named "Preferences,"
"Extensions," "Control Panels" to hold items in places that remind you
where they came from. Restart your computer.

Settings:

If your MacTCP is already configured, you wont need to change anything
other than opening the MacTCP control panel and Clicking on the PPP Icon
to make it the active network connection.

If you need to configure MacTCP, open the control panel, click on the
PPP icon, enter "192.0.0.0" where it says IP Address. Then click on the
"More" button and make the following adjustments to the settings.
Obtain Address: select the "Server" option

IP Address
Class: C
Address: 192.0.0.0
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Bits: 24 0 8
Net: 1258912
Subnet: 0
Node: 0

Routing information/Gateway Address: 199.190.76.1

Domain Name Server Information:
aceinfo.com 199.190.76.202 Default
                199.190.65.3
                199.190.73.2

The default settings for Config PPP work fine for me. They are set to
automatically accept whatever IP addresses the Server wants to assign.
The only part you need to really mess with besides setting the dialing
number, CTS & DTR, & your desired connect speed is a modem init string
that works for your modem (AT &F1 &C1 W1 works on mine).

Setting your dialing script: This is the most crucial, From the Control
panel click on the Connect Script option. From there you will need to
set your computer to either wait for a prompt or send parts of your
account information.

In the first window select wait and type in "login" In the next window
click on the "Out" button and enter "ppp:yourusername" in the box and
click the CR (carriage return) button. In the next box, select the
"Wait" button and enter the text "Password:" in the box. In the next box
select "Out" and type your password in the box and check the CR box at
the end. In the next box click on the "Wait" box, enter the text "choice:"
In the following box click on "Out" enter the text "1" and a CR

You have now set your dialing script to connect to ACE. When you launch
Netscape Navigator, it will automatically dial and set up your connect
script.

If you still have trouble, give me a call and for $30 I'll come out to
your house and set it up for you. Call me at 835-6177. If you don't have
the slightest idea how to follow these directions, please don't give the
Sysop a hard time. He doesn't pretend to be especially Mac literate. His
service is a great value and there are plenty of other services out there
that provide Mac support.
